Give your nerves some love

If you’ve ever experienced nerve pain, you won’t forget it. It’s sharp, zippy, and you can’t just shake it off easily. Nerves are powerful players in your body’s ability to function properly, and you should consider them an important part of recovery.

Most people know how important it is to get stronger, improve  range of motion, and limit scar tissue after injury.  But you may not have thought about the role your nerves play in your ability to move freely.  Nerves are  your body’s electrical “wiring.” They are immersed throughout your body and should glide and adapt right along with your muscles and joints. When irritated or restricted, they won’t move as freely and can limit your ability to move—or worse, they could make you miserable.

Nerve Anatomy

Each nerve contains tiny fibers bundled together and wrapped in protective layers, like electrical cables covered in insulation. The outer layer, called the epineurium, blends directly into the body’s connective tissue or fascia that weaves through muscles, skin, and joints. In other words, nerves don’t exist as separate structures; they are woven throughout your body.

Nerves even have their own micro blood supply which delivers oxygen and nutrients. Like any tissue, they hate being squished, overstretched, or trapped in scar tissue because that chokes their blood flow and makes them cranky.

When you move, your nerves should glide and adapt.  If you bend, twist, or reach, your nerves slide through their tunnels like spaghetti slipping through a colander. At least, that’s how things should work—unless nerves get stuck.

When Nerves Lose Their Glide

After surgery, injury, or even long bouts of poor posture, nerves can lose their ability to move freely. Scar tissue, inflammation, poor circulation or tight fascia may hinder their natural slide. When that happens, you might feel a zing down your arm or leg, tingling or numbness in your fingers or toes, an ache, a pinch, or just an unexplained tightness that stretching doesn’t touch.

This is called “positive neural tension,” which means a nerve has become too restricted or sensitive to move normally. Physical therapists often perform tests to check for it, especially after an injury.

The Science of Moving Nerves

You can restore nerve mobility with specific, gentle movements known as flossing, glides or tensioners otherwise known as neurodynamics.

Sometimes the goal involves sliding the nerve back and forth between two points, ie flossing. For example, you might straighten your elbow while side bending your head towards that side, then bend the elbow as you move your head away. This flossing movement helps to improve blood flow, reduce swelling inside the nerve, and restore smooth motion.

Other times, the goal involves gently stretching a nerve from both ends at once. These “tensioners” usually come later in rehab, once sensitivity has calmed down, and they teach the nerve to tolerate more load.

Both approaches reduce pain and restore normal motion, often more than stretching or strengthening alone.

Why This Matters

If you feel stuck in recovery, your nerves may not be moving the way they should. You may focus heavily on gaining strength and range of motion, but without restoring nerve mobility and health, you may stay stuck in a cycle of pain and stiffness.

Because nerves act as the wiring—and everything depends on smooth wiring, if you just work on the muscle strength and joint movement, you may be missing a key player in smooth and controlled movement.

I’ve often joked with clients that nerves are like an angry mother-in-law (I heard this analogy in PT school): don’t irritate her if you want peace in your life. But maybe a teenager works as the better analogy. Like teens, nerves want independence. They don’t like to feel cramped, and if you frustrate or poke at them, they’ll let you know in dramatic ways. Give them room to move, nourish them, appreciate them, and they’ll usually calm down and become happy again. 

Bottom Line

Nerves matter in rehab. If you’re recovering from an injury or surgery, don’t feel surprised if your physical therapist adds some  flowy-looking movements to your program. These “nerve flossing” techniques are supported by science to assist one of your body’s most essential systems.  Other modalites such as dry needling, massage, acupuncture, and in some cases, medication may all help you to move better.

By treating your nerves with the respect they deserve, you may return to  doing what you love more quickly. Because when your nerves stay happy, everything else works better.
